Lenovo's ThinkPad W540 : a first look at this professional workstation for the road

This is a solid, capable, and fast mobile workstation for the road. The ThinkPad W540 keeps the ThinkPad tradition for robust and reliable workstation.

More powerful and lighter yet still robust: the ThinkPad W540

The solid feel of this machine is the first impression I got taking it out of it's packaging. Having known ThinkPads going back many generations, the familiar feel of the notebook immediately says "this is going to last".

The design is classic ThinkPad. The top opens with a smooth, firm glide. The keyboard is solid, but flat and has a full number pad for engineers. The familiar track button is nestled between the "G" and "H" with the new, larger track pad in front.  So familiar, yet nicely improved.

The ThinkPad W540 has a 4th generation Core i7 CPU

The configuration for my ThinkPad W540 : Windows 7 running on an Intel Core i7 4700MQ at 2.4 GHz with NVIDIA Quadro K1100M graphics and 32 GB of memory.

This model has a 1920x1080 full HD resolution display, and the W540 does have display options with a 3K resolution of 2880x1620.

The W540 is slimmer and lighter than the W530 and the new power supply is almost 1/3 smaller which makes this machine more powerful and more comfortable for travel.

Running the first tests with the new Viewperf 12 benchmark gave very nice results. I plan to use this system for the next couple of months for tests with a full range of benchmarks and applications.

The W540 sports a full keyboard with number pad

The ThinkPad W540 is a compact 15 inch workstation, however it offers not only the full sized keyboard with number pad, but optical storage, connectivity for USB 3.0, Thunderbolt, and a 4-in-1 card reader.

With a lighter, more powerful 15 inch mobile workstation, I may start leaving my roll-bag at home.
