What is new in Lenovo's ThinkStation P500? Comparing the ThinkStation P500 & the ThinkStation S30

How does the new ThinkStation P500 improve on the previous generation? The P-series has a new design inside and out, support for more storage & memory, and adds the latest CPU and NVIDIA Quadro GPUs for next-gen performance.

The ThinkStation P500 has an all new design, new GPUs, new CPUs and much more storage than the previous generation.

The ThinkStation P500 is a workstation targeting the main-stream design and engineering market. It picks up nicely where the ThinkStation P300 leaves off. Do you need more than one GPU or more powerful Xeon processors or more memory and storage? Then the ThinkStation P500 is the right choice. What is new with the latest generation? It starts with a brand new design.

The 2014 ThinkStation P-series has a completely new industrial design which streamlines the chassis by integrating the handles and adds a stylish touch with the bright red touch point indicators which tell you where to lift or open. The cooling system inside has also been redesigned with an efficient tri-cooling design. The ThinkStation P500 also has a Flex module integrated which increases the configuration options and allows you to customize the P500 to meet your exact requirements.

Compared to the previous generation's ThinkStation S30, the ThinkStation P500 dramatically increases the internal storage capacity with up to 11 storage devices possible. The P500 model also supports the Intel Xeon E5-2600 3rd generation CPUs today and will support the new Xeon CPUs when they are released.

One of the big changes for engineers needing a graphics workstation is the addition of NVIDIA's 2014 Quadro family. From the Quadro K420 to the Quadro K6000, all the Quadro GPUs are supported and this ThinkStation P500 can support 2 Quadro GPUs for extra 3D performance.

The ThinkStation P500 has the horsepower to handle the most demanding interactive modeling, design, and visualization applications

Like the ThinkStation S30, the P500 supports 256 GB of memory. The large memory capacity, tremendous storage, fastest CPU support and high-end dual graphics support defines the ThinkStation P500 as a top-of-the-line single CPU workstation. The workstation is perfectly positioned to handle the most demanding interactive 3D modeling, CAD, and visualization applications.

For greater control of system configurations, Lenovo has created a “Flex module”. Where once you had the optical drive (ODD), the Flex module allows you to chose to replace this with other useful options. You can have an ultra slim ODD, a 29-in-1 card reader, a front-access Firewire connector, or a removable HDD. These increased options allow for a tailored workstation configuration.

The dual NVIDIA Quadro graphics options makes the ThinkStation P500 systems fit for high-end, interactive 3D graphics.

All of the Flex module configurations have been neatly designed into the system and use a configurable front bezel system. Not only is the workstation configured to your requirements, the design is kept clean and functional.

The latest generation of ThinkStation has many certifications for professional applications. The work done by Lenovo to test and certify ThinkStations on professional applications means that customers will have a faster and more reliable workstation. This increased reliability matches well with Lenovo's success in delivering the industry's most reliable workstation hardware.

To summarize the differences, Lenovo's new design delivers benefits in usability. The Flex module enables customers to configure the workstations more exactly to their needs. They can “tweak” the system to a better fit for their work and a better value, too.

The ThinkStation P500 supports dual GPUs using the latest Quadro Family graphics. With ISV certifications for performance, stability, and reliability, the P500 model delivers top-of-the-line 3D performance in a mainstream workstation.
