Save resources and time via app in the engineering cloud
Cloud Computing and apps are the main subjects of Aucotec AG at the Hanover Fair 2012. The company there presents for the first time a solution that uses the advantages of these technologies for increasing the efficiency of the engineering and maintenance of machines, plants and mobile systems. Cloud and apps may be widely talked about and popular when it comes to leisure time, information or consumption. However, their practical use in professional engineering was up to now still in its infancy.
Aucotec's new solution shows that the foresight of the developers of Engineering Base (EB) headed precisely in the right direction when 10 years ago they laid the foundation for this very future-oriented and flexible software system. For only EB's three-layer architecture enables the highly flexible scalability enabling its use from a single workplace to a global company solution. And it is only because of this that it can be offered and managed in a private cloud as "Infrastructure-as-a-Service" (IaaS).
With the virtualization of the hardware, the IT can quickly react to changed demands. In this case an SQL server farm distinctly increases both the scalability and the availability. Automatic load balancing ensures optimum use of the existing IT resources.
Thus suppliers and external employees can also be integrated from the outside without extended setup times, time-consuming consultations or data transfer and adjustment. The manufacturer maintains the control of the data in his cloud. Security gaps are not to be worried about, and there is no more data transmission via e-mail. The IT resources cost money only when actually used, safety capacities do not have to be provided.
A higher configuration level of the cloud use is the extension of the data access above and beyond supplementary in-house applications: via app in mobile devices. Aucotec is in the process of making EB available for further applications via a web service and will present its solution, from the "dashboard" project overview to maintenance applications, at the Hanover Fair. This enables the service personnel to call the data of the actual "as-built" status of a plant from the EB database directly via the app. This could be the next maintenance deadline or details about a connected cable including its destination. The app also permits entering maintenance information directly into the EB database. Thus the current plant documentation is accessible from anywhere.
